About Us

shelterMission Statement:

The SPCA’s mission is the prevention of cruelty to animals by providing:

  • Shelter for unwanted, discarded, neglected, and often abused animals.
  • An adoption program to place these animals into caring, permanent homes.
  • Humane educations programs to enlighten the public about animal problems.
  • Humane law enforcement and prosecution programs to address animal cruelty.

What contributions does an SPCA make to the community?

We accept ALL stray and unwanted animals into our shelter. We turn no animal away. We do NOT charge a fee for this service, but we do ask for whatever donation a person can afford. We ask that you keep in mind that our SPCA is a local organization. We are not affiliated with any national animal welfare organization, and as such, we do not receive funding from any national society, organization, association, or rescue.

How is the Luzerne County SPCA funded?

The Luzerne County SPCA is funded entirely by the kindness and generosity of community businesses and individuals (i.e. in-kind gifts, donations, bequests and trust funds). We are not a government agency of any kind; aside from an occasional state/county grant, we are not tax-dollar supported. We are a private non-profit (5013c) organization which was founded 50 years ago by concerned citizens who saw the need to protect those that cannot protect themselves.

Services Provided By Other Agencies.

While we work closely with all municipalities in Luzerne County, state law dictates that animal control is their responsibility. WE DO NOT PICK UP STRAY ANIMALS, that is likewise a municipal or state responsibility. Dead animal pick up along highways is provided by PennDOT or your local municipality.
